Teaching English to Kindergarten and Young Learners Certificate

Overview

The English Casa TEFL Institute Teaching English to Kindergarten and Young Learners(TEKYL) Certificate is designed for those interested in teaching English in a Kindergarten or Primary School environment. It normally takes 60 hours to complete with 6 hours of observed teaching practice.

Here is an outline of the course:

Module 1 - Trainees learn the special needs of young learners and basic Child Psychology aspects of their learning behavior and social development.

Module 2 - Trainees learn how to observe students and analyze their methods of learning and skills acquisition.

Module 3 - Trainees learn how to teach proper pronunciation and usage to young learners. Trainees how to correct mistakes and offer positive encouragement.

Demonstration Lesson #1 must be completed at the end of Module 3.

Module 4 - Trainees learn how to effectively manage a class of young learners. Trainees learn how to manage student behavior problems in a positive and encouraging manner.

Module 5 - Trainees learn how to introduce new vocabulary words and review existing vocabulary words in fun and interesting activities.

Demonstration Lesson #2 must be completed at the end of Module 5.

Module 6 - Trainees learn how to teach elements of writing to Young Learners, focusing on letters, simple words and phrases.

Demonstration Lesson #3 must be completed at the end of Module 6.

Module 7 - Trainees study how young students learn how to read. Trainees explore different methods for teaching students how to read and learn how to develop existing reading skills through activities.

Module 8 - Trainees learn how to tell stories to young learners. Trainees will review several children’s books on criteria learned in this module.

Demonstration Lesson #4 must be completed at the end of Module 8.

Module 9 - Trainees will learn how to use songs and games to effectively supplement a lesson in a dynamic and educational manner.

Demonstration Lesson #5 must be completed at the end of Module 9.

Module 10 - Trainees will how to effectively create a dynamic lesson plan for kindergarten and young learners that combines all elements learn in Modules 1 to 9.

Demonstration Lesson #6 must be completed at the end of Module 10.
